Challenge

In 2016, the Bloomington City Council completed a strategic planning exercise and selected environmental sustainability as a strategic priority for the City of Bloomington. As an effort through the Sustainability Commission and Public Works, Bloomington is working to sustain water, land, energy, and waste by being forward thinking in the way that we address both sustainability and human behavior.

As part of Green Step Cities, Bloomington wanted help achieving the next “step” in the program by becoming more efficient in their buildings. They also wanted to decrease their annual operating budget by way of efficiency savings. We are happy to say that as of June 2020 the City of Bloomington has been awarded Step 4 by Green Step Cities!

Our Solution

Apex Facility Solutions, SBC assessed the City’s buildings through an energy audit. This information allowed our engineers to create a plan that would help the City move closer towards reaching its efficiency goals and energy savings.

These were achieved through LED lighting retrofits/upgrades, building envelope solutions, controls upgrades and replacements, boiler additions, well pump savings and a solar garden subscription for a substantial amount of the City's annual electric usage.

Final Result

With the annual O&M savings and utility savings, including $70k from the Solar Gardens, the City is expected to have an annual savings of over $200k. These savings will help stretch their budget for future needs and alleviate the burden for taxpayers. This self-funding energy project provides the city with a Return on Investment of ten years.

PROJECT NUMBERS:

  • Total Project Savings:  $203,400 Annually

  • Utility Savings: $189,500/Yr.

  • Electric Savings: 974,300 kWh/Yr.

  • Gas Savings: 64,400 Therms/Yr.

Apex was able to find the funding we needed allowing us to complete our project years earlier than we had anticipated. The funding they found, their relationships with vendors and contractors combined with their superior buying power, provided us a lower cost solution.
