Anoka Area Ice Arena Project

Challenge

Anoka Area Ice Arena was in need of building improvements for their outdated facility. The bulk of their deferred maintenance needs centered around their aging R-22 refrigeration systems, in which they had no means to pay for. They wanted a new, high-efficient refrigeration system as well as other improvements to replace aging equipment with equipment and processes that were engineered to be as efficient as possible to keep the life cycle cost of running the facility low.

Our Solution

We were able to secure a grant through the Mighty Ducks program for $300,000 and worked with the City to leverage their cheap bonding rates in order to get a project financed with payments structured to meet their budget.

We replaced two R-22 refrigeration systems with one high efficient, ammonia system. Two new concrete floors were poured, and we replaced and expanded their snowmelt pit to a high efficient, fast melting, easy to clean pit. We also converted their HVAC and refrigeration controls to digital controls throughout the entire facility and replaced their existing dehumidification system that serves both rinks.

Final Result

The project is expected to save the City about $23,500 per year.
